Hydromaster powers new electric ferries for San Francisco Bay

Hydromaster, through its U.S. subsidiary Hydromaster North America Inc., has secured a contract from All American Marine, Inc. to supply azimuth propulsion units for the new WETA ferries operating in San Francisco Bay.

The project involves three all-electric passenger ferries, each measuring 92 feet in length and capable of transporting 150 passengers at speeds of up to 24 knots. The ferries will be powered by two Hydromaster Series E azimuth thrusters of 625 kW each, ensuring powerful, efficient, and zero-emission propulsion.

The WETA ferries are part of the Rapid Electric Emission-Free (REEF) program, a landmark initiative aimed at decarbonizing maritime transport in one of the United States’ most iconic waterways.

For the same program two other ferries are being built by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, another renowned shipbuilder specializing in high-speed aluminium vessels. The modular propulsion system on these larger ferries feature four independent propulsion units with Hydromaster drives, will integrate with a scalable energy storage system and advanced DC conversion technology.

This project aligns with California’s ambitious clean energy goals, reinforcing the state’s leadership in sustainable transit solutions and providing commuters with a cleaner, quieter, and more environmentally friendly alternative.

Hydromaster is proud to contribute to this transformative project, supporting the next generation of zero-emission passenger ferries.

Future-oriented and growth ambitions

Hydromaster has evolved and grown significantly over the years. Since 2015, we have operated under Dutch ownership. We’ve expanded our product range – adapting to changing needs such as hybrid and all-electric applications – modernized production, and evolved into a trusted propulsion partner for vessels owners across the globe.

As part of our international growth strategy, we established a local presence in Singapore in 2019 and recently in North America. With a growing presence and partner network across Europe, North America, and Asia, we continue to invest in the future of smart, reliable marine propulsion – built on expertise and always with a personal touch.
